Bonalgue is the result of generations of work. Located in Libourne, and part of the Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux, the Estate was originally constructed by the Rabion family in 1815 under the name “Clos Bonalgue” and was home to a captain of the Napoleonic army, who housed his regiment there for a time.
A young woman living at Bonalgue shortly before World War I was so enamored with the property that she wrote the following: “I leave to you all my memories of dear Bonalgue, witness to the happiest days of my life. There is here, under the shade of the Lebanon cedar trees, a magic that resonates through the people, and the wines”.
The key to Bonalgue’s charm lies in its unique growing conditions, which create deeply ripe grapes and silky, velvety wines with striking aromas.
The terroir of Pomerol is predominantly sand, gravel, clay, and iron distinguishing it from surrounding areas, and is considered ideal for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Château Bonalgue grows 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc grapes across a total of 9.41 hectares.
