Sancerre is one of the most famous white wines in France, characterized by their crispness and aromas of grass and gooseberries.
Before they were wiped out by phylloxera in the 1860s, the hills of Sancerre were planted with almost exclusively Gamay and Pinot Noir. As the town began replanting their vineyards, it was Sauvignon Blanc that proved sturdiest and quickly became the most popular varietal. Sancerre became its own appellation in 1936.
The combination terroir of the region contains three distinct soils: chalk, limestone, and silex, which gives many Sancerre wines a slightly smokey quality.
Domaine des Caves du Prieuré is a small estate that produces high-quality and limited-batch Sancerre. The estate is located in the village of Crézancy, 7km from the town center of Sancerre.
