Pronounced as “stang-land,” Stangeland Vineyard was named for Larry’s maternal grandparents who emigrated from Norway. Literally translated, Stangeland means “strong land” which seemed appropriate for the rocky basalt base of the vineyard site. For a time Stangeland was still primarily a grape grower. In 1991, Stangeland Winery was established, and the first vintages of pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot gris were made; a whopping 140 cases total.
During every year of its production, Stangeland has crafted very small lots of exquisite wine to include estate and single vineyard pinot noirs that showcase the terroir of the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. In 2000, Stangeland received a solicitation from the European wine competition, Mondial du Pinot Noir, held in Sierre, Switzerland. Larry enjoys sharing his experience and knowledge with the next generation of winemakers. He and his wife Ruth play host to grape growers and training winemakers whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Sustainability is also important at Stangeland, where a line of grapevines is used naturally to combat soil erosion along the property’s edge. Larry’s practical approach to winemaking means that the vineyards are farmed to LIVE standards.
