Châteauneuf-du-Pape is located in the southern Rhone Valley. It is produced in the communes of Châteauneuf du-Pape, Orange, Bédarrides, Courthézon and Sorgues in Vaucluse.
The shallow and very stony soil is mainly composed of large pebbles of quartz in the red sandy clay.
The grapes are harvested by hand using traditional winemaking methods. The grapes undergo maceration in temperature-controlled tanks for two weeks. During fermentation, workers perform both pigage and pumping over. Each grape variety is vinified separately, and they are blended together before aging. Finally, the wine is aged on fine lees in oak barrels for 15 months.
Deep purple in colour with hints of amber.
Grenache dominates with notes of strawberry, orange marmalade and candied fruit on the nose.
The palate is rich, almost opulent in attack but the Syrah gives it the power and precision. The barrel aging has helped soften the tannins and gives a rich bouquet of vanilla and roasted notes.
Tasty meat such as roast lamb, prime rib eye steak, duck breast or game. Spicy recipes. Cheeses with strong flavours such Livarot, Munster, Maroilles, Epoisses, Langres, Ami du Chambertin, Soumaintrain…
