The Motta family has been making wine in the Maremma, near the southern Tuscan coast, since 1987. Alberto Motta recently took over the reins at La Tartaruga from his father, Mario. The vineyards of red clay and sand are located just south of Grosseto and west of Scansano, bordering the Maremma nature park.
Due to their proximity to the reserve, the Mottas are not allowed to apply chemical pesticides or fertilizers in their vineyards, which suits them just fine. In fact, they recently received the EU organic certification due to their sustainable practices.
In contrast to many other Morellino producers, Alberto uses only native varietals, refusing to blend in Merlot or Cabernet. His commitment to nature and tradition have kept the family legacy alive and earned the vineyard an excellent reputation
